Balanced, but distinct - this is Lottrup US Dark Ale with its intense and soft roasted flavour characterized by coffee, chocolate and liquorice. The colour is blackish brown - darker than brown ale and lighter than porter - and the foam is light brown. It is a full-bodied, rich and soft beer with distinct bitterness and long toasted and slightly fruity aftertaste. A real winter heater.
Colour and clarity:
Blackish brown colour with a slight reddish 'glimpse'.
Body and mouthfeel:
Full body, bold and soft mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.
Balance:
Moderate dryness with a balanced, distinct but soft bitterness.
Aroma and scent:
Complex scent with 'soft' (coffee, chocolate and liquorice)
- no burnt / smoked touch) toasted notes, pure liquorice tones
(from added liquorice!) and a classic American hop flavour in association, and almost imperceptible fruit notes from the yeast.
Taste:
Medium-dry, slightly hop flavour with distinct malt body, which is primarily intensely 'soft' toasted (coffee, chocolate and liquorice - no roasted/smoked touch) with a clear touch of caramel, noticeable but well-integrated liquorice flavour (from added liquorice!). Soft but noticeably bitter and unrelatively long, toasted, liquorice-like and slightly fruity aftertaste.
Food match:
Pork jaws braised in beer flavoured with a little liquorice,
heavy cheeses, wild ragout.
Other features:
Medium drinkability, great café au lait coloured foam
and long foam durability.

The Lottrup series is a tribute to Malthe Conrad Lottrup, who in 1856 was the man who founded the Ceres brewery in Aarhus. The types of beer are based on the early American brewing tradition, which was created by European brewers who emigrated in the 19th century. One of the most distinctive features of American beers is the hop choice. Where European hop types are very distinct in their bitterness, the American types are characterized by their floral scent and more varied taste. It's something that especially suits the ale type. We have chosen to work with a mix of American and New Zealand hop types, but also with a few European ones. We think it has been worth it. But you have to judge that.An ordinary lager is brewed today in a few weeks Large-scale beer is typically brewed by brewing a basic brew based on a single malt type and a single bitter hop. To shorten the brewing time, many breweries use enzymes to shorten the brewing time. There is nothing unnatural about it, and it does not change the taste of the beer. This basic brew is often used for several types of beer, where additional flavors and color are added.
